Community Awareness Activities
MAAV distributes information through a variety of sources, including displays at the Melrose Public Library and an information booth at the annual Victorian Fair which attracts thousands of visitors to Melrose. Each October, MAAV sponsors an Annual Candlelight Vigil and Walk around Ell Pond , “bringing to light” the problem of domestic violence, commemorating the lives of victims and survivors of domestic violence from the previous year, and uniting citizens in taking a stand against violence in our community. Additional activities take place across
the community as part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, including assemblies on teen dating violence at Melrose High School, sermons on domestic violence in Melrose houses of worship, and the distribution of informational flyers by local supermarkets.
MAAV also raises awareness about relationship violence and prevention by providing periodic guest editorials in the local newspapers. Members of the Board of Directors and staff have written about bullying, hazing, mentoring and other related topics from their own individual perspectives.
The local cable TV station has been an excellent way of reaching the public with our message. Past programs have featured a survivor of domestic violence sharing her personal story, staff and mentors being interviewed about the mentoring program, and “Melrose Kids Get Real,” a facilitated discussion among middle school students about bullying.
