Launched in 2005 as part of our youth violence prevention initiative, this program links volunteer adults with middle school students for ongoing guidance and support, both in a group setting and on a one-to-one basis. The purpose of these relationships is to support students in developing resiliency and making positive life choices.

Studies show that mentored students are:

Our program begins with six consecutive weeks of meeting as a group. This allows mentors and students to get to know each other and build trust. Group activities include games and icebreakers, guest speakers, art activities and outings. Following the initial six group meetings, the group continues to meet monthly. Mentors and students also begin meeting on their own, for activities as simple as taking a walk, going out for ice cream, or going to the movies.Middle school students are referred to the program through the Guidance Department at the Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School, which partners closely with MAAV to provide ongoing support for the participants and their parents. Volunteer mentors are screened, trained and supervised by MAAV staff. With our group approach, the mentors develop a strong sense of comraderie and network of support among one another as well.

Community members are invited to get involved as mentors, guest speakers or sponsors. Local businesses can become Community Partners and support the program by offering discounts to our matches.
