The Strength of US: How Connection Can End Domestic Violence

Domestic violence is real and painful — for the survivors among us, the families trying to hold it together, the children who bear witness, and the neighbors or friends who sense something is wrong but don't know how to help. When we think about what it takes to build a world free from domestic violence, we might think the solutions to bring us there lie outside of ourselves — in sweeping policies, programs, or brave individuals.

While these are important pieces to creating this future that we at MAAV believe is possible, there is much more to it. Real change — a world where every home is safe and every relationship is rooted in safety, dignity, and respect — doesn't come from a single source. Rather, it comes from all of us standing together. Our collective strength is the solution to ending domestic violence – and it is our superpower. This year, the Melrose Alliance Against Violence (MAAV) is anchoring our 31st Annual Walk around this core truth: The Strength of US.

What Does "The Strength of US" Really Mean?

At its heart, The Strength of US is a reminder that domestic violence cannot be sustained when we choose each other — when we choose connection over silence. It means that everyone deserves relationships rooted in safety, dignity, and respect, and these relationships are built by everyone, for everyone.

It means that our well-being is collective and we are tethered to one another. No one is really safe until all of us are safe. When we harness our collective care, courage, commitment, and connection, we unlock our community's greatest superpower: our capacity to show up for one another. In doing that, we ensure isolation — the thing domestic violence thrives upon — cannot pervade our relationships, our families, and our community.

What Does This Look Like in Action?

The strength of us can feel abstract, but it's actually something we can actively practice through the choices we make every day in our homes, classrooms, workplaces, and neighborhoods. It is about noticing, accessing, and growing the good that is within us and surrounds us:

  • In Our Homes: It's families modeling respect, active listening, and empathy so children learn what healthy love feels like long before they have the words to describe it.

  • In Our Schools & Youth Spaces: It's educators creating cultures of belonging, integrating social-emotional learning, and helping kids build friendships rooted in kindness and mutual respect.

  • In Our Everyday Conversations: It's having the courage to speak up and out — whether it be a derogatory joke, comment, or harmful behavior — even when it feels uncomfortable. It's actively promoting healthy relationship skills and uplifting healthy gender norms in the spaces where we gather.

  • In Our Support for Survivors: It's believing survivors when they share their stories, sitting with them in the difficult parts, advocating for strong local support systems, and ensuring no survivor ever feels alone in their pain and in their healing.

  • In Our Civic Action: It's championing local policies and programs that work at the roots of violence and strengthen families and support systems. It’s prioritizing prevention to ensure everyone has access to what they need to build healthy relationships.

Building the Future We Know Is Possible

A community where every home is safe and every relationship is rooted in dignity and respect is not a distant dream — it is a reality we build together, in each moment and with every interaction we have, even on days when it feels really hard. We move closer to this reality when: a parent teaches a child about boundaries, a caregiver sits calmly with a child in the throes of their big feelings, a friend chooses to believe rather than doubt, a neighbor checks in instead of staying quiet. Every one of those moments is The Strength of US in motion.

This fall, let's make our collective strength visible. Will you join us?

Join Us at the MAAV Annual Walk

Show up for survivors, show up for youth, show up for community — and show what we can accomplish together when we stand with and for each other. Your presence and participation matter — for everyone still finding their way to safety, healing, and hope and for the community we're building together, so that one day, everyone has healthy relationships.
